Day 5 - Define Wash - Nov. 5, 2004
Wash- verb: 1. To make clean - as in "Please wash your hands." Noun: 1. Laundry - as in "Bring the wash to the laundry room."
"But wait, Mr. Webster, if you please. I believe there is one more."
Noun: 2. An open, dry, stream bed that twists and turns, sometimes open like a highway, sometimes tight and narrow, but always with the mystery of what is around the next bend and how far will it take us into the canyon?
Hikers avoid them; bicycles get pushed through them, and motorcycles struggle and work hard to ride in them. But on an ATV it is a purely fun and exhilarating ride. This morning was spent riding in the sands of Bartlett Wash, Tusher Wash, and another wash with name unknown.
Afternoon was in the Gemini Bridges area. Surprise Overlook was found at the head of one of the branches of Day Canyon. A surprise indeed, to suddenly be at the brink of a vertical drop of hundreds of feet! What a startling view!
After stopping at Gemini Bridges, it was on to Four Arches Trail. The right fork of the trail does have four arches visible at one time from a certain point on the trail. The left fork ends with a 45-minute hike into a great amphitheater of sandstone walls hundreds of feet high. With the shadows getting longer in the late afternoon, it was a great way to end the day. No need to mention the weather. It’s the same as the past three days - perfect!!
