Day 2 - Road Trip - Nov. 2, 2004
In early morning darkness the lights of Moab faded in the rear view mirrors. First was breakfast in Green River, then a short drive to Crystal Geyser. The geyser is a 6 or 8 inch pipe sticking out of the ground about 100 feet from the banks of the Green River approximately 8 miles from the town of Green River. It was accidentally created by drillers in the 1960s. It erupts once or twice a day for an hour or so. The water from it is cold.
On to Little Wild Horse Canyon for another distinctive hiking experience in Canyon Country. Thanks again to Robert for the idea, the directions, and the information to make it sound like it would be worth driving over 100 miles to see a slot canyon. And it was! It begins, as do many hikes - wondering how far to go and what might be around the next bend. The sides of the canyon begin to close in, and then it gets narrower, then it gets really narrow. Some minor climbs over rocks and debris, then some larger rocks that are in the way, then narrower, so it is necessary to turn your shoulders sideways while climbing over still bigger rocks and more debris. The cartoon bubble in my head is now asking, "Are there many earthquakes in this area?" Even though this hike didn’t go all the way through for us, it was an experience not to be missed and photographed. A web search using ‘slot canyon utah’ gave listings of other slot canyons in Utah and other states.
After visiting Goblin Valley State Park, the remainder of the day was spent driving the Bicentennial Highway through Glen Canyon National Recreational Area, then through White Canyon. We stopped at sites of interest, and hiked to see other attractions like the Butler Wash Ruins. Canyon Country seems huge, and a lifetime of visits will unlikely be enough to see all of it.
Discovery of the Day: The remarkable beauty of the Bicentennial Highway across southeastern Utah.
