Day 6 - Where’s the Beef? - Nov. 6, 2004
Where’s the beef? Beef Basin, that is. Relatives from Colorado are here, and by 7:20 a.m. we were on our way south of Moab to the turn off that leads to the Beef Basin Road. The Cottonwood Canyon Trail is mostly on the rim of Cottonwood Canyon with several sensational viewpoints into Cottonwood Canyon and Upper Salt Creek Canyon. The Beef Basin Trail skirts the Abjo Mountains with elevation high enough to have some remaining snow on the trails from the previous week’s snowfall. Other outstanding overlooks helped give an understanding of how the different locations relate to each other.
Beef Basin is a mile or two wide and several miles across with fairly level terrain, and appears quite grassy. This area has people that are working and living here - the ranchers. This time of year they are gathering the livestock from the summer pastures and moving them to lower elevations and nearer to the ranches for the winter. There are men and women on horseback, ranch dogs, and pickups pulling large trailers for hauling livestock. In visiting with them we were asked if we had seen any cows along the trails we had traveled.
One reason for our visit to Beef Basin was to see some of the ancient Indian ruins in this area. Although somewhat distracted by being in a new locale, we still had time to find one ruin near the main trail. Every day is a great day, but some are a little better than others. We saw lots of beef - as in cattle, that is.
