High temp of 42 in Minnesota today. The beautiful fall leaves are coming down and making the lawn a gold carpet.
The plan is to leave two weeks from today for a visit with family in Colorado, then on to Moab for about 10 days. Some people that have never been in Moab will join me for about a week. In addition to the two national parks, what are some your favorite spots to show first-timers? Some hiking, but using mostly the jeep trails will probably be best for us. Good ideas will be very much appreciated!!
Robert, while continuing to look at your wonderful web site I've come to realize what a gift your photography is to all of us. Thank you. Thank you. |

First, I always make sure that first time visitors get to see Highways 128 and 279. The views along 128 and petroglyphs along 279 always amaze first time visitors.
The #1 off-road trail that I always take visitors on in the Shafer Trail. The drive down the switchbacks from the Island in the Sky is always an eye popping thrill. I then drive along the White Rim Trail to the Gooseneck Overlook, Musselman Arch, and then return to the Shafer Trail, ultimately making my way back to Moab via Hwy 279. This whole route is fairly easy, unless you hate heights. If you’re looking for something challenging, extend the trip along the White Rim and drive down Lathrop Canyon, which goes right down to the Colorado River. It’s a wild ride, but you really won’t get any better views than you already had.
Another favorite off-road trail is the Chicken Corners Trail. The drive along Kane Creek Road, over Hurrah Pass, and along the Colorado River is just beautiful. Last year the foliage was still vibrant along Kane Creek into mid-November!
Another great area to visit is the Canyon Rims Recreation Area. The Needles Overlook and the Anticline Overlook are spectacular.
I love taking visitors on the hiking trail to Corona Arch, located on Hwy 279. The Corona Arch Trail is one of my favorites because it really captures the slickrock beauty of the Moab area. Note that Corona Arch is always shaded late in the day, so this trail is best done early.
There is so much to do here! I could go on for hours. I hope this helps to get you started with your planning.
