Suggested Hiking Trails

The Red Rock Country of southern Utah presents limitless hiking opportunities. I have chosen to highlight the Moab area because Moab is the town where I reside, and it is also the town that most people choose to visit on their first trip into this region.

I do most of my hiking with my wife Rhonda. Based on our collective hiking experience I have tried to give honest assessments of the difficulty of each hike in the descriptions below. We are both in our late 30s and our fitness level is probably pretty average for our age - average weight - average endurance. I never rush a hike because I believe that the beauty of Red Rock Country is to be savored. I cringe when I see people practically running down a trail, rarely looking up at their surroundings. Therefore, the time that I give in each hike description includes a small amount of extra time for savoring the surroundings. Many people, especially photographers, will definitely want to spend longer. The given time will be useful if you are on a tight schedule and want to make sure you’ll have enough time for an enjoyable hike.

For any hike on this list, I recommend bringing at least the following items:

  • Water - Desert hiking requires one gallon of water per person, per day. For shorter day hikes, bring at least a quart or two.
  • Sunscreen - The sun can be intense.
  • Hat - Again, the sun can be very intense. A hat that shades the back of your neck is most desirable.
  • Insect Repellent - Gnats and no-see-ums can be a major problem, as well as mosquitoes on some of the hikes that parallel streams.
  • Snack - There's nothing like some quick energy when you need it.

This collection of hikes will be continually growing. Since I am a fairly new resident in the Moab area, I am currently spending most of my free time hiking. As much as I enjoy working on this web site, it does come second to outside activities. So basically, I will be adding new hikes to this section when time permits. If you find any of the following information helpful, please let me know and it will encourage me to put up some more hikes!
