Cutler Caves
- Hatch Point Drainage - Although fairly rare in canyon country,
there are several impressive small caves in the Moab area. I took
this photo through an opening in the rock while exploring a series
of passageways in the Cutler Formation.

Description:
Canyonlands
National Park - Sandstorm
at the Green River Overlook - Windy days in canyon country mean
only one thing - sandstorms. I’ve been caught in quite
a few in the nearly 20 years I’ve been wandering around this
section of the world. Sandstorms are most prevalent during Spring.
Intense sandstorms are horrible, with near zero visibility and grains
of sand scouring every square inch of exposed skin. The most ferocious
sandstorm I ever experienced was in the San Rafael Swell area. The
storm wiped off most of the scratch resistant coating on my glasses,
got into and destroyed my Canon T60 Camera (a piece of garbage anyway)
while it was in its case, and filled my ears and eyes with irritating
grit. The storm lasted over 24 hours and I’ll never quit forget
it! This storm, however, was much less intense. During the intense
periods I would keep my cameras safely tucked away, but when things
calmed down I would pop them out for a quick photo. I couldn’t
resist photographing these amazing sunbeams. By the way, the Green
River Overlook was used in the film The Greatest Story Ever Told - Max von Sydow delivered the Sermon on the Mount from this location.
Pretty cool!

Description:
Fisher Towers Recreation
Area - One of the most magnificent views in southeastern
Utah is visible right from Scenic Byway 128 about 22 miles northeast
of Moab. Surrounded by red rock mesas and buttes, the Fisher Towers
are visible with the stately La Sal Mountains as a backdrop. It’s
an awe inspiring view that is sure to catch the eye of even the most
unobservant traveler. On a warm late winter afternoon my wife and
I decided to hike the 2.2 mile trail (one way) that winds around the
base of the towers. Along the trail we were treated to one of my favorite
sounds - the call of Ravens echoing off the canyon walls. Geologically,
the towers are composed of the Organ Rock Tongue of the Cutler Formation
capped by rock of the Moenkopi Formation. Basically, the Towers are
isolated remnants of a 225 million year old floodplain deposit of
the Uncompahgre Highland, which was located in Western Colorado. When
the Colorado Plateau was uplifted, salt deposits underlying this region
buckled, warped, and collapsed. Subsequent erosion caused the formation
of the spectacular valleys and cliff escarpments visible today. Of
course, whatever the cause, the grand display of erosional artistry
visible surrounding the Fisher Towers is a must-see for anyone visiting
southeastern Utah!

Fisher
Towers Recreation Area - Another spectacular view along the
Fisher Towers Trail. Make sure you bring along a wide angle lens to
capture some close-ups of the towers. The Titan, tallest of the Towers,
is approximately 900 feet tall! First climbed in 1962, the ascent
was documented in the November 1962 issue of National Geographic Magazine
in an article titled “We Climbed Utah’s Skyscraper Rock”.

Canyonlands
National Park - Shafer Trail - The Shafer Trail was
first developed in the early 1900’s as a livestock trail. It
is named after John and Frank Shafer, the cattlemen who first developed
it. During the uranium prospecting boom in the 1950’s the trail
was improved to allow 4WD access to the White Rim from the Island
in the Sky. Today it is maintained by the National Park Service for
recreational access to the White Rim. The switchbacks seen here provide
a thrilling ride, and some great views!

Shafer Trail - In the middle of this photograph you can see a vehicle traveling
along the Shafer Trail on the White Rim, just outside Canyonlands
National Park. The White Rim is a broad shelf midway in elevation
between the Island in the Sky and the Colorado River. As you travel
along this route massive Wingate cliffs tower overhead while the Colorado
River gorge is sunk nearly 1000 feet below the trail. I like this
photo because the vehicle gives you an idea of the massive scale of
the landscape out here.

photography is the external LCD view screen. It gives me the ability

green scrubs if I had taken this photo from above. The wide open blue
sky was an important part of this pleasant day spent travel on the

Colorado River Gooseneck
Overlook - This digital panorama was stitched together from
3 separate photographs. Most visitors to the Moab area are familiar
with the view from Dead Horse Pont State Park. From the main overlook
in the park visitors can see a faint 4WD trail meandering around
the river, approximately 1000 feet below. This photo was taken from
that road - the White Rim Trail. The Main Dead Horse Pont
Overlook is located just off the upper left side of this panorama.
The huge mesa visible in this panorama is the same mesa visible
from Dead Horse Point, except it is rotated 90%.

National Park - Monument Basin Overlook - This digital
panorama was stitched together from 4 separate photographs. This
easily accessible overlook is located at the very end of the scenic
drive in Canyonlands National Park. This was taken on the same windy
day that I took the Green River Overlook picture (above - fourth from the top) so visibility was reduced somewhat due to blowing
sand. To give you a sense of scale, the sandstone pinnacles seen
within the basin are hundreds of feet tall.
